Thought Field Therapy

What is Thought Field Therapy?

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) was developed over 20 years ago by clinical psychologist Roger J. Callahan, PhD, who sought out new approaches to healing.  Callahan was a pioneer in cognitive therapy and clinical hypnotherapy, which he hoped would deliver his clients from the distress in their lives and help them function normally again.  He felt that, as a profession, modern psychotherapy was letting patients down.  Too many clients seemed trapped in years of expensive psychotherapy, painfully re-living their traumas, to no real healing effect.

Callahan then began exploring more innovative therapeutic approaches outside of mainstream psychotherapy.  TFT grew directly out of his frustration in treating ‘Mary’, a patient who had suffered with a severe water phobia since infancy.  Her fear left her almost paralysed, incapable of the most mundane activities which we take for granted.  She couldn’t bathe her children, even showers were brief and extremely stressful.  Every time it rained she became absolutely terrified, refusing to leave the house. 

By 1980 Callahan had been working with Mary for more than a year using every conventional psychotherapeutic technique he knew.  Each approach, however, failed miserably.

Callahan then tried an experiment.  He was familiar with the meridian system, known by the Chinese for thousands of years, which coincide with acupuncture points.  When these energy streams become imbalanced, the Yin  / Yang principle, an individual becomes ill.  

Mary complained that she felt the fear in the pit of her stomach.  Callahan knew that under the eye was the location of an end point to the stomach meridian.  On a whim, and out of desperation, he told Mary “Tap here.”  He pointed to the spot below her eye.  “Think about your fear of water, and use two fingers to tap firmly a few times under your eye”.  Mary did this.  Callahan didn’t expect much to happen, but to his surprise after two minutes of rhythmic tapping Mary looked at Callahan in amazement and announced “It’s gone!”.  “That awful feeling in the pit of my stomach.  It’s completely gone!”

Mary sprang from her chair and ran towards the swimming pool.  She then bent down and gleefully splashed water on her face. 

Over twenty years later Mary is still free of the fear of water!.

How does it work?

By applying specific Algorithms developed by Roger Callahan, TFT can systematically eliminate numerous negative emotions and physical pain from your soma (physical body and energy field).

Often a patient may initially complain of an obvious symptom, which may in fact be masking an underlying issue suppressed within the subconscious.  By working through layers of life experience issues, TFT can remove the perturbations from you permanently.
