When Jim Bacon, the former Premier of Tasmania, publicly announced in February 2004, that he was diagnosed with lung cancer, the public responded with unsolicited offers of help in the form of natural or alternate therapies (CAMs).  Bacon had no interested in CAM therapies, and so forwarded all these emails, letters, etc., on to Ray Lowenthal, MD, FRCP, Director of Medical Oncology, Royal Hobart Hospital , Hobart , Tasmania for investigation and study.  Lowenthal later reported that “Several recommendations were for treatments known to be useless, harmful or fraudulent”.  However, in his report, “Public illness: how the community recommended complementary and alternate medicine for a prominent politician with cancer” he found that only two of the 157 types of  therapies recommended showed “sufficiently promising early results that they are the subject of ongoing scientific investigations”.  One of these two was xanthones extracted from the mangosteen plant.  Reference:  Treatments with evidence of benefit.   http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/183_11_051205/low10491_fm.html
